If you're new to sewing, jumping in and starting a project can be intimidating. However, sewing can be a fun and rewarding hobby once you learn the basics. In this article, we'll cover five beginner-friendly sewing projects to help you get started and gain confidence with your sewing machine.

Project #1: Pillowcase

For your first project, we'll start simple with a pillowcase. To make a standard size pillowcase, you'll need:

  • 3/4 yard of fabric for the main body
  • 1/4 yard of coordinating fabric for the cuff
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins

To make the pillowcase:

  1. Cut the main body fabric and cuff fabric into two rectangles measuring 27"x 21" and 27" x 9" respectively.
  2. Place the cuff fabric right side up on your work surface and lay the main body fabric on top of it, right side down, aligning the 27" edges.
  3. Roll the main body fabric tightly until you reach the cuff fabric, then fold the cuff fabric up over the roll, aligning the raw edges.
  4. Pin everything in place, then sew along the pinned edge with a 1/2" seam allowance.
  5. Turn the pillowcase right side out, and you're done!

A tote bag is a practical project that will give you experience working with heavier fabrics. For this project, you'll need:

  • 1 yard of canvas or heavy cotton fabric
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins

To make the tote bag:

  1. Cut two rectangles measuring 15"x 16" and two rectangles measuring 4"x 22" from your fabric.
  2. Pin the 15"x 16" rectangles together with right sides facing, then sew around three of the edges with a 1/2" seam allowance to create the bag's body.
  3. Pin the 4"x 22" rectangles together with right sides facing, and sew along both long edges with a 1/2" seam allowance to create the bag's straps.
  4. Turn the bag body right side out, and press the seams flat.
  5. Pin the straps to the top edge of the bag body, about 4" from each side seam. Sew the straps in place with a reinforcing box stitch.
  6. Turn the bag right side out, and you're done!
